<font color=pink> Henri Matisse (http://www.geocities.com/mamacita_kaye/images/matbed.jpg) is often regarded as one of the most important French painters of the 20th century. Early in his career, he was the leader of the Fauvist (meaning Wild Beasts) Movement, a painting style which focused on pure colors used in an aggressive and direct manner. His style changed many times over the years, but he never gave up his art. Matisse continued creating even into his 80's, when cancer had taken over his body. This was the time when he created the papercuttings that he is perhaps best known for. Matisse understood perfectly the relationship between color and shape, a talent which rightfully earned him the name "Master of Color."
This is just a bit of his work I found very quickly on the net. I have numerous pieces that I shall one day scan for this thread, I also have actual photos from the Matisee museum in France.
This is mostly his work from Jazz which is my favourite.

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">This sounds like a pretty interesting thread. As I am bandwidth-impaired, is there any way you people could post your replies in seperate threads, kaye-permitting that is? It's really a bitch going through the page source to find the img html tags and cutting and pasting and cutting...
Thanks</FONT f>

Absolutely not to say that you have bad taste or anything like that, because I everyone has different opinions on what they like, and what they don't. I will personally say that I very much dislike Matisse's work. To me it has always looks like a childs water colorings. Of course, I have always been a much bigger fan of realistic looking paintings. Well, no, I like many abstract pictures and things like that too. Hmm...I just know that I don't like his work OK!!? heh..
But the real reason I chose to post. I have often wondered why certain things become popular after an artists death. Because to me, I look at certain pictures and read literary works and I say to myself...holy crap, that sucks. And I can find about 10 random people that feel the same as I do. (this being 10 out of 10). And then you read back, and the people of the artist/authors times thought that they sucked too. But now a days, we decide...wow, this is what this artist/author was trying to portray to the viewer...and my question is, "HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW WHAT HE WAS SAYING?!" Easy to say that now when there isn't anyone around the dispute it. Like Matisse, he probably was just scribbling away...and then today we say, "Wow, look at all the thought he put into that...how the colors contrast in such a way as to portray his life."
Again, I repeat, I absolutely am not insulting your taste in pictures...in fact, there are a few (just very few) of his paintings that do catch my eye. And oh yeah, ignore my signature on this one... :-)
